A Better Way to Read and Write

Think about how your eyes travel across a page to reach the end of each line. When they get to the end of that line, they stop – often midsentence – and reverse themselves. Your brain momentarily suspends comprehension while your eyes make their way back to the beginning of the next line, to resume trying to comprehend the sentence as it leaps backward and down across the page.

Reading paragraphs this way takes time, reduces fluency, and injures comprehension. But there is a simple way to change this….

Instead of reading and writing each line of text from left to right, readers and writers alternate the direction of the text on the page with each line. So one line is read from left to right – the ‘traditional’ way – and the next is read from right to left. See the paragraph below:

Doesn’t it make more sense
?siht ekil shpargarap etirw ot
One sentence from left to right;
.tfel ot thgir morf txen eht
Then your eyes don’t waste much time
!enil hcae fo gninnigeb eht ot kcab gnilevart

This would take a little getting used to…but…most of us can throw a ball from our right hand and catch it with our left, as well as throw one with our left and catch it with our right, correct? Even if we can’t…we could with some practice, maybe….

Training our brains to read and write this way would just be a matter of practice and time, and would greatly improve both experiences.

What are your thoughts?

I totally agree that such approach is a good exercise for our brains, like trying to write with your left hand instead of your usual right increases flexibility of your mind. But here comes the question: where will you get texts like that? I think there's not a lot of text written in such a way, if you hand-write a text for yourself it's OK,and still it's difficult, but it's even more difficult when it comes to typing - all typing software usually works from left to right, thus if you want to create such a text you have to learn to type words backwards :)

Hmmmm, Ana....to me, it seems like a good programmer could find a way to make word processing problems do this automatically....can any programmers out there comment?

Thank you for thinking about my idea, Anasthezia =)

Try using mirror ;)

It will be a wonderful experience if we do train our brains to read that way. then most probably we will comprehend ideas very fast and hence boost our knowledge base.

It would take a while before getting it right, it gets a little confusing but bravo for finding such an unusual and original idea.

Hey, thank you, Owl! This week, I'm teaching me how to use my mouse with my left hand....I'm a rightie...heh

reading is the greatest gift that humankind has,the noly thing that separates us from animals...call,perusing, scanning, contexualising but its all worth it.

a person with desire to know more and become more than i ought to be in the world of writers.
hey i'd say reading depends on your environment lets say i can read well with some music...though it doesn't apply to everyone.so that's a great idea..i would say.
